This Weekend in Stanly County
By Bridget Huckabee
Weekends for most folks are for kicking back, relaxing and having fun. Music is a big part of that enjoyment and there’s plenty of music in the air this weekend in Stanly County, and it’s all free. All you have to do is show up to enjoy your favorite sounds in Albemarle, Locust and Badin.
But let’s start the weekend a little early and with something a little different. Wednesday brings Stanly County Library’s Summer Reading Kickoff with Steve Brogan. It takes place at the Agri-Civic Center from 10:30 am until noon and there is no charge.
Wednesday is also time for Stanly County Farmers’ Market to display their fresh produce, homemade goodies and crafts. The market takes place at Market Station in downtown Albemarle from 8am until noon.
Now for that music we mentioned. Albemarle Parks and Recreation concert series, “Thursdays at the Station,” takes place—you guessed it–every Thursday at 7 pm. This Thursday, come and hear some great bluegrass music by A Deeper Shade of Blue sponsored by South Central Oil Company. The Albemarle Parks & Recreation Department host this free summer concert series at Market Station in downtown Albemarle each week from May through August. Don’t miss these great Thursday evenings when Market Station comes alive with all types of music that includes gospel, rock, pop, bluegrass and more.
Friday and there’s more music to choose from. The City of Locust hosts a Summer Concert Series and Cruise-In in their beautiful Downtown. The band “ToneBlazers” will perform. All performances start at 6pm. The Locust Cruise-In starts at 5pm in the Locust Town Center. The concert series and Cruise In is a great time to get outside and enjoy wonderful music and unique cars in a beautiful setting.
Over at the Badin Inn Golf Resort and Club there’s the regular Friday night “Pickin’ on the Porch.” This Friday the Inn will feature “Loose Change” playing from 7 pm to 10 pm. The music is free, but if you choose to dine, the Inn’s pub serves a full menu of food and drink to add to your enjoyment.
Saturday morning is the time for the Stanly County Farmers’ Market again. It takes place from 8 am until noon at Market Station in downtown Albemarle. Stroll through the rows of stalls and take in the delicious sights and aromas of this open-air market as you stock up on fresh veggies, one-of-a-kind homemade goodies, flowers and crafts.
Saturday also brings the Albemarle Academy of Dance Recital to the Stanly County Agri-Civic Center. The Albemarle Academy of Dance was founded in 1990 by Leigh Johnson Roush as a means of educating local children in the art of dance and related performing arts and to provide enriching opportunities for students in the academy. The Academy is home to “The Showoffs”, national award winning competition dance company, “City Youth Ballet”, youth ballet performance and outreach company, and “Playtime Children’s Theater”, youth acting and performance outreach company. Drop by and watch these talented children perform.
To wrap up your weekend, head out to Badin again to hear more “Pickin’ on the Porch.” Big City Lights will play from 7 pm to 10 pm for your enjoyment.
Come and join your friends, neighbors and visitors from far and wide as you enjoy the sound of music this weekend in Stanly County.
